Stephen Dwyer, New London High School, and Jessica Torgersen, Fitch High School, are the 2009 recipients of the Kiwanis Club of New London N B King Scholarships. Each student will receive a $3000 scholarship grant. These fine young students rose to the top of over sixty applicants, which is the largest pool of applicants ever. Glenn Hamler, chair of the Scholarship Committee, was joined by Jim Sylvester, Sherry Lombardi, Rich Cheatham and Valeda Grills.

While in high school, Stephen was a member of the Connecticut Pre-Engineering
Program, Envirothon (Environmental Science Club), Interact, Student Council, Film
Club, Soccer Team and the National Honor Society. In his spare time, Stephen worked at Chuck E. Cheese, Shop Rite and Abercrombie & Fitch. He was joined at the award program by his grandmother, Olga Concepcion and his mother’s boyfriend, Luis Lozada. In the fall, Stephen will pursue his passion of film at the New York University Film School.

Jessica has been a four-year member of the Fitch High School Key Club, and
served as President her junior and senior years. She attended Key Leader during her
sophomore year and also attended two New England District Key Club Conventions in Springfield, MA. Jessica has also been very active in and out of school during her high school years beyond Key Club. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Environmental Club, Math Team, Varsity Lacrosse, Co-Catechist at a local school, been a Teacher’s Assistant at the Catherine Kolnaski Elementary School and worked as an assistant with Groton Parks and Recreation. She was joined at the program with her father, David Torgersen, and her stepmother, Sue Torgersen. Jessica will be continuing her education at Boston University and is planning on studying International Management.

The applicants are evaluated on academic achievement, need, community
service and extracurricular activities. The scholarship award is named in the memory of longtime club member N. Blake King who served as New England Kiwanis Governor in 1966.

Annual Golf Tournament

Hello New London Kiwanis Club members and Happy Memorial Day,

As you will see in your upcoming News & Views, Friday was a great day for golf and for the culmination of all of our hard work to raise money for Kiwanis causes!!  This was clearly a team effort and on behalf of the golf committee, I want to thank the many club members who supported this event in so many different ways.  You sponsored the event, you solicited other sponsors, you golfed, you recruited other golfers, you gave us raffle prizes, auction items and golfer goodie bag gifts, and you worked as volunteers for all or part of the day on Friday.  One of our members, Connie Potter, even returned from her new home in Ohio to volunteer at the tournament!

I think this event reflects well on the club and it is certainly a financial success.  Early tallying shows us raising approximately $11,000.  This would not have happened if you had not been willing to make it happen. Thank you so much for supporting this major fund raiser.

We will be having our final 2009 Golf Committee wrap-up meeting on Thursday, May 28th at 4:00 PM in Ted Nelson's office in New London.  The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss lessons learned.  We hope to develop a list of what we did well and what we need to improve or do differently in the future.  All club members are invited to attend this meeting.  Please come prepared to share your observations, ideas, and suggestions.  If you cannot attend the meeting, please send me an email prior to Thursday with your thoughts.  I am really looking forward to a productive conversation which will allow us to continue to grow this fund raising event and to grow as a club.  Even if you did not attend the tournament we are interested in your thoughts and ideas!!

Once again, thank you so much.  I look forward to getting your input.Sherry
